Famous artists

The work of some artists is so outstanding that it becomes famous the world over. People are willing to pay high sums for them, and museums pride themselves at owning their work. Other artists are also influenced by them. some become famous in their lifetime but for other, both fame and fortune come too late.

Here are five such artists-two Indian and three from Europe.

1. Jamini Roy (11 April 1887 - 24 April 1972) was an Indian painter. He was honoured with the state award of Padma Bhushan in 1955. He was one of the most famous pupils of Abanindranath Tagore, whose artistic originality and contribution to the emergence of modern art in India remains unquestionable. Was born in Bengal, he started studying art from the age of 16. He studied folk and tribal art. He was very inspired by the Kalighat Pat paintings of Bengal. Their simple and bold figures and flat colours can be seen in his paintings.

2. Maqbool Fida Husain (17 September 1915 - 9 June 2011) was a modern Indian painter of international acclaim, and a founding member of The progressive Artists Group of Bombay. Husain was associated with Indian modernism in the 1940s. This self-taught Indian artist loved drawing and would go to the countryside to paint the landscape. He shifted to Mumbai to pursue art and first apprenticed under a hoarding painter. Later his fame as a fine artist grew and soon he was one of India's leading painters.   


    
 3. Vincent van Gogh (30 March 1853 - 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and Influential figures in the history of western art. This extraordinary artist sold only one painting in his life and died a poor man. In his early days he tried many professions - teacher, art dealer, bookseller - but nothing worked. He produced many paintings which are now considered masterpieces and sell for millions of dollars. 






4. Pablo Ruiz y Picasso, also Known as Pablo Picasso, (25 October 1881 - 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, print maker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet and playwright who spent most of his adult life in France. This Spanish artist painted many styles-both realistic and abstract. He lived in different places-Paris, Barcelona and Madrid. In addition he also did collages, murals, sculpture and ceramics.










5. Francois Auguste Rene Rodin, Known as Auguste Rodin, (12 November 1840 - 17 November) was a French sculptor. Although Rodin is generally considered the progenitor of modern sculpture, he did not set out to rebel against the past. He was schooled traditionally took a craftsman like approach to his work, and desired academic recognition, although he was never accepted into Paris's foremost school of art. This French artist started drawing from the age of 10. He soon realised that it was sculpture that he was best at. His sculptures were very original and different from the work done in those days. So they were not appreciated and he was criticized a lot. Yet he continued working and became world famous.
